UPDATES FROM THE SOUTH

Mapping for Territorial Defense

Twenty-five Achuar, Shiwiar, Shuar, Zapara, Waorani and Kichwa leaders recently participated in a two-day workshop in the jungle-border town of Puyo to map all of the social and environmental conflicts occurring in their territories, particularly in areas that have already been identified as oil blocks or mining concessions. By working in groups, the indigenous leaders identified conflict sites in physical maps related to oil exploitation, logging, colonization, mining and others.

The collectively drawn map will be vastly distributed among the indigenous communities and will be used as a tool to identify spatially where the conflicts are, not only for their own territories, but also those of their neighbors. The map will show all the indigenous territories, their boundaries and the areas that have already gained legal title and those that are in the process of being legalized. This year, Pachamama estimates that 350,000 hectares will gain final legal title which will recognize the indigenous inhabitants as the rightful owners of that land.

The map will be ready and printed by the end of December. Pachamama facilitated and funded the workshop together with CDES (Center for Social and Economic Rights).

UPDATE FROM THE NORTH

East Coast Leadership Summit

On September 29th-Oct. 1st Awakening the Dreamer Symposium Facilitators and Community Leaders convened for a Leadership Summit in New York State. Twenty-four Facilitators, Hosts and Facilitators-to-be came together to build community, develop leadership skills, share best practices and support one another taking the Symposium into their communities.

This Summit happened because a dedicated and enthusiastic team decided to make it happen. With only a few weeks of lead time they put together a comprehensive agenda and invited everyone who has been involved in putting on Symposiums in the east and those planning to attend the next Facilitator and Community Leaders Training. They gathered at Geronimo Retreat center in the Catskills and everyone contributed to a vibrant, rich and dynamic experience. Active Facilitators got reinvigorated and connected with new members of their regional teams who will join them in producing and facilitating Symposiums when they complete their training.

Among the topics covered were which communities to reach out to, how to more effectively invite guests and how to effectively deal with challenges in our work together, and key elements of excellent production. At the end of the weekend regional teams said when and where they plan to produce Symposiums and set goals and targets to work towards together.

There were also opportunities for exploring our creativity, acknowledging one another and celebrating our gifts. Like the Symposium itself, the weekend provided experiences for growth and learning, new perspectives and inspiration. The Summit was a big milestone in building and deepening the extraordinary community of people on the east coast who are bringing forth a sustainable, just and fulfilling human presence.

And now, an inspired team of Facilitators are forming in the Bay Area to put on a west coast Summit for our regional teams here in January!

NEW MOON ACTION

Send Letter to Peruvian President in Support of Indigenous Partners

The Achuar, Quichua and Urarinas peoples in the Corrientes river basin of the Peruvian Amazon urgently need your solidarity and support. For over a week, the Peruvian Achuar have been peacefully blockading the long-time oil production facilities in the eastern part of their ancestral territory, operated by the Argentine company Pluspetrol and built by Los Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum. They are calling for international support to press the Peruvian government to fully address their longstanding grievances over the dumping of over one million barrels per day of toxic wastewater into rivers which they depend on for daily survival.
