UPDATES FROM THE SOUTH

Achuar Running for Ecuadorian Congress in Upcoming National Election

In less than one month, the Ecuadorian government will see dramatic changes on all levels of government. In a country that has seen almost every political configuration imaginable, there still could be something fresh and new this year: an Achuar Congressperson. Domingo Peas, an Achuar leader, is running for National Congress, the first time that an Achuar has run for a high-level political post. The indigenous organizations of the Pastaza province offered him the candidacy because they trust Domingo to take the voice of indigenous people to the Congress. His campaign slogan is 'our voice in the country'.

Domingo is the person leading a significant reunification among indigenous peoples in the Southern Amazonian region of Ecuador, working to create a unified indigenous front which has been divided in recent years, mainly by the influence of oil companies.

Peas (pronounced pay as), 40, has held several important positions within the indigenous movement in Ecuador; former President of the Development Council for Indigenous Peoples of Ecuador - CODENPE, former Vice-President of CONFENIAE , the umbrella confederation for all Amazonian indigenous nationalities and communication leader for the Achuar Nationality, NAE (formerly referred to as FINAE).

Domingo is affiliated with the political party 'Pachakutik', known as the indigenous political party of Ecuador. Pachakutik was founded in January 1996 primarily to advance the interests of a wide variety of indigenous peoples' organizations throughout Ecuador. It was formed to serve as an alternative to the traditional cluster of political parties that had ruled Ecuadorian politics. In the days and weeks leading up to the election, Domingo is traveling all around the Pastaza province, visiting communities and talking to people about his plans for Congress.

UPDATE FROM THE NORTH

New Symposium Facilitators Unleashed in Europe

When the first international Facilitator Training began in England on September 6th, 50 powerful, committed enthusiastic people had arrived from all over the United Kingdom, Poland, the Netherlands, Canada, Russia and Australia. They are now taking the Symposium into their communities, with 3 Symposiums already scheduled in England.

This international expansion was the result of a partnership with The Pachamama Alliance and Be the Change. Be the Change is a UK-based organization that has attracted a community of people aligned with bringing forth a sustainable, just and spiritually fulfilling world. Because of this, the Symposium was a natural fit with their members.

The training was held at a beautiful retreat center in Devon, called Embercombe, whose mission is to inspire "Earth-honoring action."

Some of the developers of the Symposium went over to offer a deepened experience of the background, spirit and content of the Symposium, all of which was soaked up by the participants who seemed hungry for the message of possibility and active participation that is embedded in the Symposium. The Europeans believed that although people there know more of the facts about our environmental crisis, there is a more pessimistic mood that they felt could be altered by delivering the Symposium. Although the Symposium was originally designed for US audiences, most of the new facilitators felt it could have a huge impact in their communities with relatively minor adaptations.

There will certainly be substantial challenges in translating the whole Symposium into Polish and Russian! If you would like to find out more about Symposiums planned in Europe keep watching the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium calendar or email Nick Hart-Williams at Be the Change.
